The UAW is presently the largest union representing state of Michigan employees, with over 17,000 members of UAW Local 6000 in the Human Services and Administrative Support bargaining units. Local 6000 members work in every Department of State government, in every county of the state.
The UAW also represents public employees who work for various states, counties, and municipalities – even the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Tens of thousands of employees at public colleges and universities in Michigan and across the United States are also UAW members.
Engineers, budget analysts, computer programmers, psychologists, social workers, attorneys, and other professionals are all part of the UAW. Some are public employees; others work for private employers such as hospitals, museums, or news organizations; still others — such as writers — are free-lance professionals.
Government employees are represented by the UAW in state government, local government and public colleges & universities.

State of Michigan, Local 6000: 17,000 state employees, including Administrative Support workers in all state departments as well as Human Services workers including analysts, consultants, social workers, probation officers, psychologists and others.
State of Indiana, Local 9212: 14,000 employees in all state departments, including Labor and Trades workers; technical, office and professional employees; regulatory inspectors; corrections officers, and motor carrier enforcement personnel have been represented by the UAW since 1990. The current governor has taken away the legal right to bargain but the UAW is still fighting for workplace rights of the members in the State.
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: More than 17,000 public employees are UAW members, in several different Local Unions. These include technical, office and professional workers at the Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Quality Board, the Governor’s Office of Youth Affairs and the Department of Treasury; school cafeteria workers at the Department of Education, maintenance employees at the
Department of Transportation and Public Works.
